January 2023 marked our first 18 months as a fully autonomous 501(c)3 organization, striving to transform education across the nation into liberated centers of learning where the systems, practices, culture and conditions uplift the inherent brilliance and intrinsic potential of every Black male student. Total charitable giving by corporations, foundations, individuals, and bequests to support the work of nonprofits dropped 10.5 percent in 2022
Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits face unique fundraising challenges, with 86.5 percent always or often having trouble accessing a large, diverse number of funding sources AND 72.7 percent always or often challenged to identify or cultivate new funders.
More than 50% percent of these organizations indicated they would shut down if they lost one or two key funders
Funding to Black communities accounts for only 1 percent of all community foundation funding, resulting in an underfunding of Black communities of $2 billion.
